Thanks Kaden, have been looking for some recommendations for a little while; gone ahead with The Elements of Photography now.
Excellent choice Ben. It is an amazing workshop that will change anyone’s view of film and digital and advocates that these are 2 separate and different types of media with differing qualities to be used as appropriate.
I’m ashamed to say I have precious few photography books… A few books with pictures, fewer with words and instruction. I’m laying on the floor as I write this and looking at my bookshelf though and a couple I recommend are:
- Twilight by Gregory Crewdson (my inspiration to start the whole Fragments series way back when)
- National Geographic Photography Field Guide (taught me a few basics when I knew nothing about composition, aperture, etc)
- Couples by Ellen Von Unwerth (she’s a fashion photographer and this is just a collection of random images that fit that theme – one of my favourite photographers)
I just ordered Terry World online too – anotehr favourite photographer of mine (Terry Richardson). Funny that i’m not a fan of actually taking fashion photography but sometimes like looking at it.
anyone recommend this? http://www.amazon.com/dp/0810910039?tag=wwwlawrenceri-20&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=0810910039&adid=184H46RPJJSR7GDEHMD2&
Lawrence I saw that book recently at a book store. I browsed through it but did not purchased it
because I was already purchasing a few others.
The complexity of the set up of Gregory Crewdson’s images reminded me of the complexity of the
images of David Lachapelle. If memory serves me right the cover image shows a home inundated
with water and floating remains of family life including a female body. This water element is so
reminiscent of an Andrej Tarkovsky film. :)
I am an avid collector of books, photography books. I think we should start a weekly image book
recommendation.
