High Speed Macro Photography

By lawrence • Feb 8th, 2010 • Category: Daily Shots

And now for something a little different. I tried some splash photography over the weekend to build up relevant samples for the Zeiss 100mm f2 Macro (for Canon mounts) I’m trying out. This type of work is not a forte for me but I knew enough to take a decent crack at it. This is all manual so it takes a lot of patience (and an appalling hit rate) to get right. If I recall, ISO was up in the ISO 2000ish range with shutter speeds at 1/1000 and f/10 (or thereabouts). All images with a 5D Mark II – I’ll post more in the main review.

  1. Never tried such photography but during my dpchallenge months I remember dropping objects and trying to catch them in just the right spot. Very satisfying when you get it right. I also remember a lady on pbase dropping milk into black coffee and getting nice results. The funny thing about these is thought you were using film for these!
    Should they be sharper?!

  2. Lovely color and sharpness. Just like David I too have yet to try it.

  3. Thanks… Definitely not film… imagine a 1% hit rate and you’re about right. Irene Müller is who you’re thinking of btw ( http://www.pbase.com/daria90/milk_meets_coffee ) – she’s a long time friend of mine from pbase and is superb at this kind of photography. Were you being serious about sharpness? I’m interested in that comment. It’s definitely true for the splash droplets in the lower image as the tiny drops appear to be moving. I noticed that halfway through but kinda liked the effect so didn’t increase the shutter speed. You really need a dedicated studio to do this proper properly – not me hunched over a bowl of water (or in this case wine) in my back garden.

Funny you mention dpchallenge days – almost forget about those…

We should all enter a dpchallenge on week – just for the hell of it.
